The SMNO is the contact point for Swiss shipping companies and shipowners. It provides information and services in connection with commercial shipping as well as endorsements of foreign certificates in accordance with the STCW Convention.
Advantages of sailing under the Swiss flag
The Swiss flag offers a number of advantages for shipping companies, owners and seafarers – as well as instilling a feeling of home on board the ships sailing under it.
Export
As of 1 July 2016, seagoing vessels may only be loaded with containers whose weight has been verified. Shippers can either weigh the containers physically or make a theoretical calculation.
Underwater cultural heritage
In 2020, Switzerland ratified the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage to support the long-term preservation of valuable cultural assets such as shipwrecks and submerged settlements.
