Swiss Maritime Navigation Office
The Swiss Maritime Navigation Office (SMNO), part of the Federal Departement of Foreign Affaires (FDFA), serves as the flag state authority for Switzerland. Its primary responsibilities include the registration and supervision of commercial seagoing vessels, as well as leisure and sport craft, which fly the Swiss flag at sea. The SMNO also represents Switzerland's interests in numerous international organisations concerned with both inland and maritime navigation.
Who are we?
As the flag state authority, the SMNO is responsible for the supervision of commercial seagoing vessels sailing under the Swiss flag as well as sport and leisure vessels.
European inland navigation
Switzerland participates in various international organisations to promote the development of European inland navigation, ensuring its future viability, environmental sustainability and safety.
Representation in international organisations
Switzerland is represented in the International Maritime Organization, the International Seabed Authority and the International Labour Organization.
Maritime Strategy 2023–2027
The Maritime Strategy 2023–2027 was adopted by the Federal Council on 2 June 2023. It defines goals and measures in various maritime areas.
